WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

Frequently asked Questions

Demodectic mange is a disease that most dogs are born with but it only really affects dogs when the immunity is low, such as in young pups and dogs suffering from underlying health conditions. It is normal to find small numbers of mites on dogs (demodex or demodectic). However, if your dog is stressed, injured, or has immune system problems, the population can spiral out of control.

Mites that cause sarcoptic mange typically move from infected animal to a healthy one through direct contact. It is possible that your pet is infected with mites from another pet (like your neighbor's dog or cat) or from wildlife living nearby (such as foxes or rabbits).

At the early stage, dogs with mange begin to show symptoms by scratching constantly until the skin and fur become irritated and red. After a while, other symptoms begin to show, including:

  • Scratching around the ears
  • Red bumps or rash
  • Hair loss
  • Scab formation on skin and crusting of sores
  • Oily skin with bumps
  • Discolored or thickening skin
  • Skin infections
  • Unpleasant odor from the ears

The microscopic mites prefer to invade hairless skin, so the areas affected by mange mites may include: ear flaps, chest, elbows, hocks, arm pits, and belly. When there is an infestation certain areas of your dog’s skin will be itchy and the skin will become red and inflamed.

Mange is caused by mites that live on the dog's skin. This powerful solution helps to rebalance the dog's system and over time make it an unattractive host for the mites. The remedy also helps ease the symptoms of mange and provides:

Demodectic mange is not contagious and cannot be passed from animal to animal or animal to human. Mange usually infects animals who have a weakened immune system, therefore contact between two dogs or a dog with mange and a human will not lead to the healthy dog or human getting infected.

Sarcoptic mange, however, is very contagious to other dogs as well as to humans.

Read more about mange and how to get rid of it in this blog on how to get rid of dog mange.

If your dog is itching uncontrollably, fleas are most likely the first culprit to come to mind. Sometimes you can even spot fleas on your dog's fur. But, red and scaly skin without itching is a good indication that you are most likely dealing with demodectic mange mites on your dog.

Sarcoptic mange on the other hand is extremely itchy.

Topical applications like antibacterial shampoo can help relieve itching and get rid of mange infestations. However many of the topical treatments contain harsh chemicals such as benzoyl peroxide, and sulfur, therefore BestLife4pets All Natural Mange Treatment for Dogs may be the better choice, as it can also help prevent re-infestation.

Demodectic mange is not very common in cats, however cats can still get sarcoptic mange or scabies. Sarcoptic mange, usually called canine scabies as it is common in dogs is very contagious and can also infect cats.
